The Queerties

Queerty is a popular online magazine and newspaper covering LGBTQ-oriented entertainment and news. It was founded in 2005 by David Hauslaib and enjoys a hefty following.

Since 2012, the site bestows the Queerty Awards or "Queerties", in which their readers vote for the "Best of LGBTQ Media and Culture." The announcement of the award winners takes place every March.

The Queerties bestow honors on prominent and conspicuous LGBTQ celebrities and recognizes their positive contribution in a variety of categories. Categories may vary from year to year.  Sometimes they will recognize someone for a dubious or not-so-positive distinction. But the most coveted award in the Queerties line-up is always the Badass Award.

What is a Diva?

The Very Definition of Popular...

For better or for worse, to be a diva is to be remarkably popular and iconic. But divas are independent and rarely care what others think about them.  So their fame might sometimes be more like infamy. Their success might be more more notorious and dubious.

Originally a diva was described as a stubborn, self-important person who is temperamental and difficult to please. They are aloof and cocky, unapproachable and untouchable. Regardless of their petulance and arrogance, they can do no wrong. They act entitled and holier-than-thou. A spoiled brat. Despite the negative connotation, it was considered a compliment.

Larger Than Life...

Female or male...  straight or queer... in music, in cinema, in sports, in politics, or in life... divas distinguish themselves by expressing an unapologetic energy, confidence, and attitude.  They have charisma and charm. They are unique, they are unprecedented, they are one of a kind. They are inspiring and influential. They take charge. They are flamboyant and fabulous and larger than life. You may love them or you may hate them...  but you can't ignore them.

More and more, a diva is becoming a label for one who is preeminent in their field, possessing superior talent, very successful, uncompromising and confident. They get things done.  Nothing stops them.

Over the years, the definition has expanded to include words like lively, spirited, glamorous, and flamboyant. Divas are bold and sassy, gutsy, outspoken, and provocative. They are often outrageous and shocking.

Phrases like "badass" and "ass-kicker" have come to join the list of monikers for these highly courageous personalities. As activists who interrupt the status quo, shift the paradigm, break the mold, and make a difference, they have come to be respected for using their stubbornness for good.

With the evolution of more noble definitions, we might consider these folks as "divas" in their own right...

The Out 100

Trailblazers and Groundbreakers... chosen by Out Magazine...

Since its beginning, Out Magazine offered an annual list, the Out100, documenting one hundred influential and inspirational LGBTQ personalities and celebrities.  the Out100 was founded to celebrate and honor LGBTQ figures who have made great contributions, had a big impact on the community, and make the world a better place. In 2019, editor Phillip Picardi said the Out100 was the magazine's "greatest and most well-known tradition."

In conjunction with the listings is the annual Out100 Awards honoring a handful of that year's celebrities with Ingenue of the Year, Reader's Choice, Artist of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Visibility Award, and other categories. Honorees are trailblazers, groundbreakers, advocates and activists that come from a variety of sectors, including entertainment, media, business, athletics, arts, science, education, and politics. Oftentimes, the Out 100 features local (unsung) heroes who might not necessarily be in the spotlight.

Cover Queers

Right out front for all to see...

You know you've reached a certain level of fame when you get your picture on the cover of a famous magazine.  Rolling Stone, Time, Sports Illustrated, Vogue, and Playboy have all been favored destination spots for celebrities seeking mass recognition. By achieving such prominence, you could get noticed, raise eyebrows, or make waves. You could be like Bretman Rock, who became the first male on the cover of Playboy. You could be a trans woman on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Or you could stir up controversy, as Kristen Stewart did by appearing in a jockstrap on the cover of Rolling Stone.
